Job Summary

The Phlebotomist collects blood samples from patients in nursing homes and other off site locations in a courteous and caring fashion. Specimens are returned promptly to the Laboratory for analysis. Specimens are collected by a variety of techniques which include venipunctures, finger and heel sticks. The Phlebotomist also processes physician test requests and enters test requests into the Laboratory Information System and is responsible for the accurate and efficient registration of patients.

Qualifications - Minimum

Registration responsibilities include:

Verification of patient insurance coverage status and identification/recognition of ICD-9-CM codes for diagnostic and procedural information found on physician requests. Participates in the training of new employees, students and other Mercy employees: Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Familiarity with computers required; experience with McKesson-STAR and Cerner Lab systems preferred.

At least one year of phlebotomy experience and/or Phlebotomy registration with an accrediting agency is preferred.

Completion of medical terminology course is preferred. Current CPR certification or obtained within 6 months of employment is required. Orientation to a medical environment and knowledge of medical procedure and terminology is desirable.

Ability to concentrate and pay attention to details. Accurate typing skills at 30wpm. Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations at a level normally acquired through completion of a high school education or equivalent is necessary.

Must have a driving record which meets the standards for insurability with MERCY’s insurance carrier according to SOP 961.164.

Working Conditions: Regular (up to 50% of work time) exposure to infections when handling specimens but potential for personal harm or injury is limited when proper safety and health precautions are followed. Moderate level of physical effort exerted 20% or more of work time. Travel is required to obtain specimens from off-site locations. Call time is required.


Hours per pay period: 40

Hours: 9:00am to 5:30pm

This position is primarily scheduled for outpatient but will provide inpatient coverage as well and does require weekend and holiday rotation.

Additional hours to cover days off PTO illness and outings.
