Job Summary

The staff registered nurse in the SCU /PACU under the supervision of the Unit Director is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluation of all aspects of critical care or post anesthesia care for the pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient.

In The Special Care Unit the RN:

Assesses each patient and establishes and coordinates a written plan of care consistent with the patient’s special needs and significant social and environmental relationships.

Responsible for the utilization of the nursing process in the prevention of and intervention in life-threatening situations of patients admitted to SCU.

Maintains the established standards of critical care nursing practice based on a thorough knowledge of the interrelatedness of body systems and the dynamic nature of the life process.

Collaborates with other members of the health care team to coordinate patient care and to support families within the SCU.

Promotes the institution’s philosophy, mission and values during all interactions with patients, families, staff and others.

Maintains current knowledge of health care issues and nursing practice.

In the Post Anesthesia Care Unit the RN:

Provides patient care and coordinates activities according to the PACU Standard of Care, policies and procedures.

SCU AND PACU SPECIAL DEMANDS:

Ability to prioritize care and deal with urgent situations in a timely manner.

Ability to use sophisticated technological equipment including computers and implement clinical interventions requiring increased depth of knowledge and astute decision making. Algebraic math skills are required to calculate drug dosages and infusion rates of vasoactive drugs.

Ability to communicate clearly and deal effectively in multiple patient care situations including those of an emergent nature.

Computer skill and basic knowledge of the Windows environment, order management, and patient care information management. Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers.

Qualifications - Minimum

Education:

Graduation from a state-accredited school of nursing.

Current licensure from the state of Ohio as an RN.

Demonstrates skills in Basic EKG interpretation and recognition of significant dysrhythmias.

American Heart Basic Life Support Course and Advanced Cardiac Life Support Course completion.

Current or prior experience in critical care is preferred.

Interpersonal skills with the ability to deal effectively with multiple complex demands of relationships on departmental level, as well as with internal and external customers.

Working Conditions:

Requires full range of body motion, including moving / lifting patients and equipment, manual dexterity, and eye / hand coordination. The physical demands of the job range from medium to heavy. Corrected visual acuity (including the ability to discern colors) and hearing required. Ability to cope with stressful situations.

Reporting Relationships

Responsible to Director Medical/Surgical/SCU. Workers supervised: RNs, LPNs and STNA’s.

Hours

Hours per pay period: 40

Hours: 8:30am to 5:00pm

Hours are variable depending on volume.

Must have surgical services experience.
