Cleveland Clinic Stress-Technician-Non-Certified in Cleveland, Ohio

Job Summary:

Assists with performance of graded exercise tests. Provides appropriate instructions and patient education regarding stress testing. Processes reports for review of CCF and referring physicians. Conducts cardiac risk factor screening for patients. Provides technical support in emergency situations. Assists in orienting new personnel, cardiology fellows and visitors to CCF stress testing procedures. Assists in research studies as assigned. Facilitates in peer interviewing. Participates in the CQI process.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs preliminary patient assessment.

  • Reviews (HandP) for test appropriateness, medications, risk factors, age and test order.

  • Collects relevant height and weight measurements. Interviews patient for pertinent medical history, signs and symptoms.

  • Prepares patients for stress test: performs appropriate EKG prep; explains test procedure; connects patient to stress monitoring system.

  • Notifies test supervisor of patient readiness; provides test supervisor with review of the patient's history, limiting factors and current activity level; obtains BP and EKG at rest and during exercise.

  • Assists with monitoring of the patients during the stress test and recovery period.

  • Disconnects patient from the monitoring system and escorts patient to Nuclear Medicine cameras or dressing rooms.

  • Ensures entered test data is complete and accurate; clarifies inaccuracies with physician or test supervisor and submits report for the physician approval.

  • Maintains testing and exercise equipment for condition and accuracy. Performs regular, basic, preventive maintenance as authorized or contacts appropriate maintenance personnel.

  • Cleans equipment and instrumentation.

Education:

  • Completed coursework from a recognized institution in basic science or completion of EKG course.

  • Knowledge of EKG techniques and principles to include EKG prep, recognition and significance of common cardiac rhythms and EKG changes, patient hook-up and EKG equipment operation as displayed by coursework and /or on-the-job training.

Certifications :

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (must obtain certification within 90 days of employment).

Complexity of Work:

  • Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment.

  • Ability to function in a variety of medical situations.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum one (1) year experience related to direct patient care such as administering medical tests, medical procedures or other patient care functions.

  • Ability to accurately auscultate rest and exercise blood pressures.

  • Computer skills equivalent to utilize Cardiovascular Medicine databases and programs.

  • Previous stress testing experience desirable.

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full range of motion, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.

  • Requires standing or walking for extensive periods of time. Requires normal or corrected hearing and vision to normal range.

  • Ability to provide physical assistance to a patient during the testing procedure.

  • May require some exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
