Job Summary:

Repairs and maintains machinery, mechanical equipment and plumbing. Trouble shoots equipment problems; take inventory of repair parts and supplies and performs maintenance work.


  • Repairs and maintains machinery and mechanical equipment in accordance with diagrams, sketches, operation manuals, and manufacturer's specifications, using hand and power tools and precision-measuring and testing instruments.

  • Observe mechanical devices (pumps, engines, motors, conveyor systems, laboratory equipment, water coolers, ice machine) in operations and listens to their sounds to locate causes of trouble.

  • Dismantles devices to gain access to and remove defective parts.

  • Repairs or replaces defective parts.

  • Adjusts functional parts of devices and control instruments or may install special functional and structural parts.

  • Lubricates and cleans parts.

  • Start devices to test their performance.

  • May set up and operate table saw, drill press power saw and other power tools to make and repair items.

  • May be required to repair electrical equipment.

  • Complete work orders and/or service logs for equipment repairs.

  • Inspections, installs, repair and replaces parts needed to maintain the heating, water, gas and drainage system of the hospital.

  • Plan installation by studying blueprints and work sketches to determine parts needed for job or project.

  • Marks cutting and bending lines, chalk and cuts pipe to use and special fittings necessary. Marks with pipe cutter or hacksaw.

  • Removes burrs or rough edges from pipe with reamer.

  • Cuts threads on pipe with hand or powered pipe threading machine, and bends pipe over block by hand to produce correct curvatures.

  • Fits by screwing, bolting or soldering.

  • Seals connections by forcing sealing passage holes in walls and floors, through which pipe are to pass, with an electric drill and narrow blade saw. Installs pipe assembles and plumbing fixtures.

  • Screws thread pipes and fittings together with adjoining pipe assembles. Installs plumbing fixtures such as sinks, toilets, showers, and water heaters and connects them to outlets and inlet pipes by fitting gaskets, coupling, traps and valves and soldering connections to seal joints.

  • Repairs and maintains piping system and plumbing fixtures, inspects all connections and other parts of system for leaks.

  • Repairs clogged drains and toilets with plumber's snake or sewer snake.

  • Repairs or replace damage fixtures.

  • Replaces tile and floorboards through which holes have been cut for pipes.

  • Replaces light bulbs and ceiling tiles throughout the facility.

  • Performs steam-fitting duties such as setting and securing heating units, and connecting traps, valves and thermostats to pipe system.

  • Responsible for the general appearance of the exterior area including parking areas including removal of debris and rubbish everyday, removal of any material creating a safety hazard and assisting with the removal of snow and spreading of ice melting items on sidewalks.

  • Responsible for reporting unsafe conditions of walks and driveways and maybe required to repair defects in asphalt and concrete.

  • Must practice good safety in performing his duties.

  • Keeps Director and/or Supervisor informed of work status.

  • Assist loading/unloading equipment, materials and supplies as required by Director and/or Supervisor.

  • Keeps Director and/or Supervisor informed when leaving/returning from deliveries pickup.

  • Participates in the Hospital Disaster Plan and fire alarms. Other duties as assigned.

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferably from a vocational high or trade school with courses in shop, mathematics, maintenance and repair.

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

  • Ability to read, blueprints and schematics.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines.

  • Must have knowledge of safety factors required in use of maintenance and carpentry tools.

  • Ability to operate power equipment associated with job duties including the pick-up truck.

  • Ability to accurately perform multiple tasks simultaneously and meet multiple demands.

  • Ability to construct alternative positive problem resolutions.

  • Ability to keep accurate records and documentation.

  • Must possess a valid driver's license (VDL) in the current State, a good driving record, and maintain eligibility of insurability to operate Hospital's vehicles.

Work Experience:

  • Four years experience as a maintenance mechanic in a hospital setting required

Physical Requirements:

  • Lifts, carries, pushes, or pulls a variety of supplies and equipment (Weighing up to 50 lbs.)

  • Climbs ladders, balances, stoops, kneels, and crouches to make repairs or installation.

  • Ability to work from heights. Ability to work inside and outside.

  • Ability to work around equipment and machinery, subject to noise from machinery and electrical shock or burns from heated equipment.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
